News: Rentals available

Just a reminder that we have plenty of snowshoes and cross country skis (along with the bindings, boots and poles) available for rental. Just $15 for the day, or $25 for 2 days. Call us at 888-4586 for the details or to book a set for yourself.

The skis will come waxed (grip and glide if applicable) and ready to go, and of course we'll make sure to fit you with the correct size for either the skis or the snowshoes.

Rentals are popular around the Christmas holidays so call soon if you want to count on a pair for your holiday excursion.

News: Trail Conditions

Our friends at Riding Mountain National Park have sent us an update on their trail conditions - click here to view.

And remember, for updates and info on other local and rural cross country ski trail conditions you can always go to the Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba trails conditions page here.

Happy trails!

News: We do Pine Tar Ski Repairs

Still hanging on to those wooden skis? Good for you, I guess. Whatever gets you outside is good. Except for a house fire. That would be bad.

Almost as bad is repairing your wooden skis. Prepping your wooden skis for pine taring is a time consuming and someone finicky process, and the tar itself is pretty messy stuff. Oh, and then there's the whole bit about taking a blow torch to the tar after it's applied to the skis. Yikes!

Why don't you just let us do it for you? The guys in the back of the shop are paid to get messy and point flames at your recreational equipment. While they're doing that you can go finish your Christmas shopping, or check the smoke detectors at home.

Product Review: Studded Tires

Wow, is it slippery out there! The melting and freezing that's been going on for the last few days has left behind portions of our lovely city streets with nice sheets of smooth ice. Time to plug our studded tires.

We have a couple of types of pre-studded tires in stock for between $45 - $55 each, and we also make more aggressively studded tires in-house. We have mostly 26" tires in stock, though we do have a few 700c / 29er tires as well (up to about 35mm wide or so - nothing wider yet for the 29er crowd).

If you want to easily flip between studded and 'regular' tires depending on the day's riding conditions we sometimes recommend picking up an inexpensive spare wheelset as well, which allows you to make quick wheels changes before you head out. We have plenty of inexpensive wheelsets in stock - remember that you'll need an extra rear cassette too.

Of course if you want to just stick studs on for the whole winter the tires are all you need.

Unique Stuff: Argus

We usually reserve our 'unique stuff' category for exotic bikes and other merchandise that only comes through our doors under special or unusual circumstances, but we figure shop dog Argus is unique in his own way, and we just felt like sticking up a pick of him.

Usually full of life, Argus is pictured here after a hard day of play. That's not to say he doesn't still have the energy to greet you when you come by the shop, so pack a treat if you want to make a friend.

Bike / Snowshoe / Ski adventure

Our friends from the Olympia Cycling Club have just informed us of a "club ride" open to the public on January 8th, using bikes, skis, or snowshoes.

Check out the details on the Oly Club blog. Winter/backcountry experience is advisable.

Looks like a cool idea.
